Species data for reuse

Machine-readable facts for every species profiled on Global Animal Guide — one bulk JSON file, or one stable record per animal.

Quick answer

Fetch animals.json for the full 497-species dataset (or animals.csv for spreadsheets), or request one JSON record per species at /api/animals/<slug>.json. All are emitted at build time and licensed CC BY-NC 4.0.

The dataset is an editorial export of the guide’s species registry: names, taxonomy where available, IUCN-style conservation status labels used on each profile, four measured stats (mass, length, top speed, lifespan), short facts, native range, named sources, and canonical URLs. It is licensed under CC BY-NC 4.0 — free for non-commercial reuse with attribution and a link back to the canonical species page (or to this dataset page when citing the bulk file). Figures are compiled estimates from the sources listed on each profile; they are not a substitute for primary literature or official IUCN Red List assessments.

Bulk download (JSON)

One file with a dataset wrapper (count, generated timestamp, licence, attribution) plus the full record for all 497 species — the same shape the per-species API serves.

animals.json

Bulk download (CSV)

One flat row per species (RFC 4180): identity fields, taxonomy (kingdom through genus), the four measured stats, continents and canonicalUrl — ready for spreadsheets.

animals.csv

Per-species records

Fuller records add summary, taxonomy (kingdom through genus), facts, range (nativeRange, continents), sources, lastReviewed and the same CC BY-NC 4.0 licence block:

/api/animals/<slug>.json

Example: /api/animals/lion.json

Fields

Bulk animals.json

  • meta: count, generated, license, attribution
  • animals[]: full species records, identical to the per-species API

Bulk animals.csv

  • slug, name, scientificName, category, conservationStatus
  • kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus
  • weightKg, lengthM, topSpeedKmh, lifespanYears
  • continents, canonicalUrl

Per-species API

  • Identity fields, plus summary
  • taxonomy: kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus
  • facts[], range (nativeRange, continents), sources[]
  • lastReviewed, canonicalUrl, license

How to cite

Prefer the species page when a single animal is discussed; cite this dataset page when using the bulk file.
